The Marin County Probation Department is thrilled to announce the launch of the Summer 2024 Career Explorer Program. This esteemed initiative, funded by the department, offers young individuals aged 15 to 22 a unique chance to explore careers in local government and nonprofits through a rewarding eight-week paid internship.
Chief Probation Officer Marlon Washington commenced the event, emphasizing that Career Explorers goes beyond educating participants in the traditional sense and the importance of county government in the community.
The program’s curriculum is designed to empower the youth with practical skills and knowledge. Led by experienced professionals, the educational sessions cover a wide range of topics, including career assessments, interactive public speaking, college preparation, resume building, interview techniques, rights and responsibilities, workplace violence prevention, and financial literacy.
This year, a new course on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion was introduced, providing participants with essential knowledge for self-awareness and workplace competency. The program also features an inspiring guest speaker series with experts from various fields.
The first phase of the orientation started June 17 when participants began a comprehensive professional development journey focusing on crucial skills such as leadership, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and communication. The program attracted over 200 applicants, and after a competitive selection process, 75 exceptional young people were chosen. By the end of orientation, participants will have professional headshots and the experience of panel interviews, preparing them for their future careers.
In the program’s second phase, interns will have the exciting opportunity to work up to 25 hours per week at a rate of $17.50 per hour. The hands-on experience will provide them with valuable insights into the operations of local government and nonprofits, setting them on a path to success in their future careers.
