Petaluma man killed in head-on crash in San Geronimo Valley

San Geronimo Valley Traffic Collision Fatality- Identity Released

The decedent has been positively identified as:

Carlos Enrique Verdugo-Cruz, a 19-year-old male from Petaluma, CA.

On Tuesday August 20, 2024, at approximately 8:09 AM, a head-on vehicle collision with injuries was reported to 9-1-1 having occurred in the 440 block of Nicasio Valley Road near Sir Francis Drake Boulevard within San Geronimo Valley.

Reportedly, a Honda Civic sedan operated by the subject, was observed travelling southbound at a high rate of speed, being operated in a carless manner, and for reasons unknown and which remain under active investigation, failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, crossed over the painted double yellow roadway divider lines, and struck a Ford Expedition traveling northbound on the same roadway.

Post impact the vehicles came to rest within the road having sustained significant damage. The subject driving the Honda sedan was found to be unconscious, and unresponsive within his severely damaged vehicle. First Responders arrived on the scene shortly after and located the subject lifeless in cardiopulmonary arrest. His death was pronounced on the scene at 08:23 AM.

The trapped operator of the Ford Expedition was extricated by First Responders from their vehicle and transported via paramedics to an area hospital for medical treatment.

A forensic postmortem examination with routine toxicology testing is scheduled for later this week. The cause and manner of death will be pending the conclusion of the investigations being completed by the California Highway Patrol – Marin Office and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office – Coroner Division. No further information will be released by the Coroner Division at this time, as this is an active and ongoing investigation. Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the California Highway Patrol – Marin Office.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office and personnel of the Coroner Division offers our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Verdugo-Cruz.
