Sherman R. Frederick/Properly Subversive
I sometimes think about Mike O’Callaghan and wonder where he’d be in the Democratic Party today.
For those of you who don’t know, Mike was the Democratic governor of Nevada from 1971 to 1979. As a snot-nosed cub reporter, he was the first governor in my reporter’s notebook. I remember him fondly because he was one of those rare elected officials who didn’t act much like a politician. I can’t remember him being anything other than a decisive, happy warrior for the interests of all Nevadans.
I’m sure readers will know someone like Mike O’Callaghan. I wonder how they’d fit into the Democratic Party today?
Not well, I suspect.
Would an old school Democrat be on board with these gender identity tenants?
- Schools hiding children’s gender transition from parents.
- Letting boys compete in girls sports.
- Replacing words like “woman” and “breastfeeding” with “uterus haver” and “chest-feeding.”
- Supporting sex change surgeries for children against the will of the parents.
- Appointing a Supreme Court justice who wouldn’t define “woman” because she is “not a biologist.”
- Suppressing scientific evidence that puberty blockers don’t work.
- Mandating tampon dispensers be put in all boy’s bathrooms.
If you have to swallow that list whole to be a “good” Democrat in 2024, I’m honestly looking to explore where this leaves guys like Mike O’Callaghan?
My guess is Mike would be where most of the country are, as evidenced in the Nov. 5 national elections.
He wouldn’t hate transgender people.
In fact, he’d be all for them living their best lives in peace. But he would 100% oppose the “new biology” mandated by activists. He’d not only answer “no” to the seven tenants above, he’d answer “hell no”! Might even storm off somewhere about Question 3.
Mike died in 2004, so I can’t ask him now. But if I could go back in time and ask him if he thought it would be OK for, say, Mike Tyson in his prime to identify as a “woman” and box biological women, he’d want to know what kind of drugs I was taking.
My point is as long as the Democratic Party puts up candidates like Kamala Harris who unblinkingly support the ideology that “trans women are women”, this party isn’t going to win a national election for a long, long time.
No other way to see it, really.
