Life Tribute: Baciliki ‘Chita’ Vasiliki Halikas, founding member of Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Novato

December 17, 2024 by Marin 2 Comments

Baciliki “Chita” Vasiliki Halikas passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024, in Lincoln, California, at the age of 89. Born on September 5, 1935, in Guadalajara, Mexico, she was the cherished daughter of Theodora Protopulos and Harilaos Papanicolau of Mercovouni, Greece. She grew up alongside her siblings Alejandro, Nicholas, Dimitra, and Angela.

During a visit to Monterey, California, to assist her sister, she met Spiros Halikas, the love of her life. After five years of correspondence, they married in 1958 in Guadalajara. Together, they built a life in San Francisco and later Novato, where they were beloved restaurant owners. Their establishments—The Town Club in Novato, Spiros Chateau in Terra Linda, The Red Vest in Novato, and The Green Oaks in Cotati—were mainstays of the community, known for serving Greek and Italian food.

A devoted wife and mother, Baciliki raised four children: Jerry, Tim, Alexandra, and Theodora. Her faith guided her life, and she was a founding member of the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Novato, where she organized events like the first Marin County Greek Festival.

In retirement, she and Spiros moved to Lincoln, helping establish St. Anna’s Greek Orthodox Church, where she served as its first Philoptochos President.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Spiros; her children; twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: St. Anna’s Greek Orthodox Church, Roseville. Trisagion: December 18 at 5 p.m. Funeral: December 19 at 11 a.m.

May her memory be eternal.

Spiros, Jerry and family, I recently heard of Chita passing and was deeply saddened. Please allow me to offer my deepest condolences for your family’s loss. Chita was always very kind to me and my children throughout the years I worked at the Green Oaks. My thoughts and prayers .are with you and your family.
