Heat pump technology is having a moment. Demand for residential heat-pump water heaters and heat pumps for space heating and cooling is growing in demand among Marin County homeowners partly because of incentive programs such as Electrify Marin, a local hub for building electrification and energy efficiency.
The Marin County Sustainability Team, which coordinates the Electrify Marin initiative, is ready to provide answers for sustainability-minded residents as they start to plan a home improvement project. The team is hosting two free webinars that will provide “deep dives” into heat pump projects and help lower a home’s greenhouse gas footprint.
Online attendees will learn the basics of pump technology, what a homeowner needs to know before starting a project, and the benefits to indoor air quality and monthly energy bills when old gas appliances are replaced with modern technology. In addition, webinar participants will get to participate in a Q&A session with experts and hear about rebates and incentives that can help pay for upgrades.
Here is the webinar schedule:
- Heat Pump Water Heaters: Wednesday, February 26, 6-7:30 PM
- Heat Pumps for Space Heating and Cooling: Wednesday, March 5, 6-7:30 PM
Register for either one by visiting the events calendar on the Sustainability Team’s webpage.
Funding programs from state and local governments and utilities are already in place to encourage adoption. The webinars will also cover the 2022 Federal Inflation Reduction Act, and the current state of federal funding and tax credits as they relate to residential heat pump projects.
“There can be a learning curve with these newer heat pump technologies for homeowners and contractors,” said Kellen Dammann, a program coordinator with the Sustainability Team. “It’s our goal with these webinars to cover those questions and concerns for residents looking into these projects.”
Another resource is TECH Clean California, an initiative to accelerate the adoption of clean space and water heating technology across California homes. Ultimately, it advocates for an equitable pathway to carbon-free homes by 2045 and aims to install six million heat pumps by 2030. TECH Clean California is funded by state and federal sources.
