DUI Collision Update
Yesterday (4/18), Novato Police Officers responded to a roll over DUI collision fronting Sinaloa Middle School. The driver was identified as, Melissa Steiner, a 48-year-old Novato resident. Steiner drove into a couple parked vehicles which caused the vehicle to flip over and is suspected to be under the influence of prescription medication and had additional narcotics that were not prescribed in her possession. Steiner failed the Field Sobriety Tests at the scene and was medically cleared by Novato Fire personnel and hospital staff. Subsequently, Steiner was arrested for DUI of prescription medications and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.

We are thankful for the quick response of emergency personnel and that no one was seriously injured. This incident serves an important reminder, that there is more than one way to be under the influence. Many legally obtained and commonly used over the counter (OTC) and prescription drugs can affect a user’s ability to drive safely. Additionally, our Traffic teams were out in the community yesterday, conducting DUI saturation patrols. These operations are crucial for improving road safety and protecting our community. During the operations, our Traffic Unit focus on the most dangerous distracted driving behaviors.
Remember:
• Never drive after taking ANY medication that may impair driving.
• Never drink/use drugs and drive.
• Read the warnings about the drugs you are taking.
• Antidepressants, opioids, and other prescription drugs may cause impairment.
• Be responsible, have a plan, and drive safe.
• If you see an impaired driver, call law enforcement.
Upcoming Safety Operation Dates:
