Marin’s rock art scene

September 8, 2020 by Marin Leave a Comment

Paul Liberatore

Music memories from Marin County’s rock music scene in the late 60s have been kept alive by four notable rock musicians, artists and history buffs who will come together for a live streaming event on Sept. 30, 2020 at 5 p.m. The live panel event will be hosted by MarinMOCA and broadcast to an international audience on fans.com.

Paul Liberatore, Jay Blakesberg, Dave Getz and Jonathan Korty (who are also great friends) will provide stories, photos and art from the explosion of psychedelic rock music in Marin County starting in 1966, the year before San Francisco would get on the map as the world’s hippie capital. Highlights from the live panel discussion will include the in-person scoop from Dave Getz on Janis Joplin — her pain, her joy and how they developed the style of raw psychedelic blues-rock that created a sensation in 1968; Jay Blakesberg’s story about his first mind-blowing trip to California at age 18, traveling from New Jersey on a Greyhound bus, to photograph the Grateful Dead at their New Year’s show in Oakland in 1979; and much more!

Journalist Paul Liberatore will moderate the panel. An author, producer and musician, he has covered rock music and the counterculture for Marin Independent Journal and San Francisco Chronicle for more than 45 years.

Jay Blakesberg who is a San Francisco-based commercial photographer and video director whose work appears regularly in many magazines, including Rolling Stone and Guitar Player. Over the past 30 years his photographic rock and roll journey has produced photos with legendary artists including The Grateful Dead, Carlos Santana, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Sammy Hagar, Green Day and John Lee Hooker to name a few.

Dave Getz who was former (and current) drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company during the reign of Janis Joplin and when the rock band hit the top of the charts. He also toured with Country Joe and the Fish and It’s a Beautiful Day. A longtime resident of Fairfax, California Dave has been a visual artist for as long as he’s been a musician.

Jonathan Korty who has been a leading figure on the Marin music scene as a producer, nightclub owner and musician for three decades. He formed his first band in 1995, the very successful grove band Vinyl. Other band affiliations include Electric Apricot, Soul Ska, Koolerator Barry Sless and more.

The live stream panel is being hosted by MarinMOCA to celebrate its upcoming “Marin’s Rock Art Scene” Exhibit that opens September 12 and runs through November 8. The exhibit features photography, memorabilia and art from over fifty years of rock art and rock history in Marin.

The exhibit is sponsored by Bread and Roses. The Rock Poster Society, Mike’s Bikes and Bruce Burtch. An exhibit catalog which features an introduction by award-winning music columnist, Paul Liberatore, and essay by Curator Meghan O’Callaghan will be for sale.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students, free for members.
