Fairfax fines its own Council Member for cutting down redwood tree

October 6, 2020 by Marin Leave a Comment

Fairfax fined it’s own councilmember, Stephanie Hellman, $1,000 for cutting down a redwood tree on her own property. Now, Hellman and her husband, Ted, are seeking a retroactive permit and a rescission of the fine.

The tree measured 8 inches in diameter. Ted Hellman admits he gave the go-ahead to a contractor to cut the tree down as part of a larger fence project on Hellman’s property and that his wife knew nothing about it. An anonymous tipster alerted the city to the alleged violation.

The community’s Tree Committee will hold a public hearing on the matter on Oct. 26.
