Sgt. Alan Bates was selected Novato Police Department’s Employee of the Year for 2020.

The announcement was made last week at the 2021 Virtual Paint the Town Red event (Novato’s Birthday). Sgt. Bates holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and was hired by the Novato Police Department in 2008, after he graduated from the Police Academy 1st in his class.

After completing Field Training, Sgt. Bates spent time in Patrol and then transferred to the Traffic Unit. After nearly 6 years, he returned to Patrol and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2016. He also began his most recent assignment with the Novato Response Team at the beginning of 2020.

In addition to his general assignments, Sgt. Bates serves as a member of the SWAT team, a Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Coordinator, and De-Escalation Instructor. Sergeant Bates enjoys interacting with the community and collaborating with other agencies within Marin County.
