Commentary: Keep Drake Drake

April 1, 2021 by Marin Leave a Comment

Sherman R. Frederick

The name-change woksters at Drake High School are looking pretty silly these days.

First, administrators and teachers at the school whipped up a frenzy about Drake being a racist slave trader (not accurate, by the way) and then proceeded to start an alleged “grassroots” process to change the name of the high school without so much as a by your leave.

Then they created a goofy process in which names were submitted and voted on in head-to-head competition like a March Madness bracket. It carried the legitimacy of an election in Venezuela.

Eventually, it came down to two names: Olema High School and Bon Tempe High School.

Then disaster struck. The Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria stepped in and told the woke name-changers that they opposed using the word Olema because it’s been “co-opted.” I’m not sure what the “co-opted” issue is, but, look, if Graton Rancheria doesn’t like the name, that makes the Drake name-changers look pretty darn silly.

Hell, this bad idea has been going on for months. Did no leader at the school or the district think to check with the keepers of the tribe’s culture it seeks to honor? Talk about the pretentiousness of the woke.

The bottom like is that this needs to end. I assure you that just like the failed attempt to rename Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, most people want Drake High School to stay Drake High School. If you don’t believe me, put it up for a popular vote.

This has become a joke
