Redwood High School and Cal graduate Jake Curhan is keeping his dreams of playing in the NFL alive with a team he knows well

The 2021 NFL Draft came and went without Curhan’s name being called. But it wasn’t long after that he was contacted by the Seattle Seahawks. The ink dried on his rookie contract on Friday, May 14, when the Seahawks officially announced the deal.

“After the draft, there was definitely a good amount of interest (from teams),” Curhan said. “I felt Seattle was a good opportunity up here. There weren’t a lot of draft picks and the offensive line was an area of need, so I thought I could get more playing time.”

Curhan first started playing football as a Redwood High sophomore in 2013. His physical stature and natural aptitude for the sport made him a star for the Giants. A three-year varsity starter from 2013-15, Curhan earned first-team All-State Medium School honors from Cal-Hi Sports, San Francisco All-Metro honors and was named the Marin County Athletic League Lineman of the Year as a 2015 senior after moving to left tackle and anchoring the offensive line for a team that averaged 212.9 yards per game on the ground.

Curhan is in Seahawks minicamp working out as both a guard and tackle.

“Everything is much more detail-oriented in the NFL, but that’s a product of being in an environment where football is your job,” Curhan said. “But what we’re running up here and what we ran at Cal are similar.”

In Seattle, Curhan will play for a fellow Redwood alum, head coach Pete Carroll.

“He called me the day after the draft and asked me about Marin things,” Curhan said. “He’s a big fan of Mount Tam.”

The Seahawks are scheduled to open the 2021 NFL season September 12 at Indianapolis. The first game in Seattle is scheduled to be September 19 against Tennessee.
