Marin County has not advanced to the less restrictive Yellow Tier and it may never advance to that level. Not because it’s done a bad job dealing with COVID-19, but because it’s done a great job vaccinating citizens.
Six Bay Area counties have yet to get to Yellow. And, with the state abandoning the color-coded system on June 15 and opening up the state, Marin will stay Orange for the duration of the crisis.
Dr. Matt Willis, the Marin County health officer, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the state’s color-coded formula indirectly penalized counties that have high vaccination rates. Testing naturally decreases as more people are immune. Marin County has among the highest rates in the state, with 84% of eligible residents — and 57% of the total population — fully vaccinated.
Asking the state to rejigger it’s criteria to let Marin pass to Yellow isn’t worth the effort with the reopening date so close, Willis said.
“And I’m not hearing a lot of concern in our community that we’re not at yellow tier,” Willis told the newspaper.
