Gov. Gavin Newsom mandated that all state employees and health care workers be vaccinated, or be tested weekly and wear masks to continue in their jobs.
This makes California the first state to do so. The mandate takes effect Aug. 9.
“We’re at a point in this pandemic where an individual’s choice not to get vaccinated is now impacting the rest of us in a profound and devastating and deadly way,” the governor said in making the announcement.
The governor encouraged local governments to adopt the same rule.
