The 2021 Summer Bocce League came to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday, Sept. 11, with Fireballs walking away with the championship trophy after a closely contested “Super Roll” against Red Rooster.
Sixteen of the 36 teams participating in the summer league made it into the championship tournament. Teams were seeded into a single-game elimination bracket based on their regular season record, with Blazing Hibocces, Boccelism, ForgetaBocce, and spring 2021 champs Lazer Katz taking the top seeds. All games were played on the new bocce courts in Dunphy Park in front of an increasingly large and vocal throng of spectators.
In a surprising turn of events, all of the top seeds were eliminated on the way to the finals. When the dust cleared, the 11th-seeded Red Rooster and 12th-seeded Fireballs were the last teams standing for a Super Roll championship match to 21 points.
The final match was close from start to finish, with Red Rooster clinging to a 19-15 lead in the late stages. Fireballs scored a perfect four points in the next frame to tie the score, then reached 21 points and the championship with a clinching ball that was less than an inch nearer to the pallino than Red Rooster’s closest ball.
The Sausalito Bocce League will return to action soon, with the fall season getting underway on Thursday, September 23. Thirty-six teams will be competing for the title, including some new teams to go with the returning squads. The spring 2022 season will provide the next opportunity for new teams to join the league.
