Gov. Gavin Newsom will require eligible public and private school children to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Unvaccinated children will not be allowed to go to school.
“We’re leaning forward,” Newsom said. “We want to end this pandemic. We are all exhausted by it.”
“Vaccines work,” Newsom said. “It’s why California leads the country in preventing school closures and has the lowest case rates. We encourage other states to follow our lead to keep our kids safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
The new mandate will roll out starting with grades 7-12, then for K-6. But it won’t take effect until the FDA approves the vaccine for those age groups, which is not expected to happen until 2022.
