Where is the most segregated neighborhood in the Bay Area? It’s the Canal Area in San Rafael.
That’s according to the Othering and Belonging Institute, a UC Berkeley research organization. It did an analysis of racial demographics in every neighborhood in the Bay Area using what is called the “divergence index.” That’s a score of how a neighborhood rates in racial makeup compared to the surrounding area.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported the results last weekend.
The Canal Area was the No. 1 segregated neighborhood with 90-plus percent of the residents Hispanic. Less than 5% of the people living in the area are white.
Hunters Point and Chinatown in San Francisco and a number of neighborhoods in East Oakland followed the Canal Area on the list.
While segregation mostly involves Hispanic and Black populations, it can work with white populations. The Othering analysis shows that there are dozens of neighborhoods in the Bay Area that are over 80% white.
The Town of Ross, for example, is a highly segregated white neighborhood. The report said that eight out of the Bay Area’s 10 most segregated white-majority neighborhoods are in Marin.
