Gwendolyn Phair and Julianne Breton star in the Novato Theater Company’s “The Importance of Being Earnest.” It’s the organization’s first performance since the pandemic.

Special to Marinscope

The all-volunteer Novato Theater Company’s first show since the Great Pandemic of 2020 is “The Importance Of Being Earnest,” written by Oscar Wilde and directed by Mark Clark.

Wilde’s farcical sendup of Victorian culture has been shifted to more recent times, and his witty dialogue thrives with the change.

“Our production of The Importance of Being Earnest will be set in England in the early 1960s, a time similar to Oscar Wilde’s time at the end of the Victorian era, when traditional society was undergoing great change. Our play will contrast the post-war 1950s with the so-called Peacock Revolution, which introduced an explosion of gender-bending fashion, long hair, rock music and counter-culture thinking,” director Clark told Marinscope.

The cast in the production will feature Kim Bromley as Lady Bracknell, Julianne Bretan as Gwendolen Fairfax, Gwendolyn Phair as Cecily Cardew, Shari Clover as Mill Prism, Lorenzo Alviso as Jack Worthing, Thomas Peterson as Algernon Moncrieff, Mark Shepard as the Rev. Canon Chasuble and Tim Clover as Lane Merriman.

The Novato Theater Company is in its 102nd season. It started in 1919 as a section of the Novato Improvement Club and was incorporated as a non-profit in 1947. The goal of NTC is to “present quality theater to audiences and offer theatrical training and mentoring opportunities in a creative and supporting environment for performers of all ages.”  Backed by over 100 years of continuous productions, NTC is committed to providing outstanding community theatre to the San Francisco Bay Area.

The play will run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 21 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Novato Theater Company, 5420 Nave Drive in Novato. For tickets and prices, call 415-883-4498 or email Tickets@NovatoTheaterCompany.Org. The theater’s website is:  NovatoTheaterCompany.Org.
