Antigen Tests: An Important Testing Resource
Recent news coverage about rapid antigen tests has created confusion about the use and validity of rapid antigen tests. Marin County Public Health views rapid antigen tests as an important diagnostic tool for COVID-19.
Since the over the counter COVID-19 testing option became available in mid-2021, antigen tests have become a primary resource for detecting and preventing the spread of COVID-19. They can accurately detect the presence of the virus when someone is infectious and have the benefit of immediate results.
A positive rapid antigen test IS a positive test. It does not require an additional PCR test to confirm result. Anyone who tests positive using an antigen test should isolate immediately to help stop the spread of COVID in their household and community.
National testing supply shortages and limited availability of PCR tests support the widespread use of rapid antigen tests. At this phase of Marin’s pandemic response, rapid antigen tests help us expand testing resources where we need an immediate answer.

School Sports & Performance Spectators Clarification
Marin County Public Health and Marin County Office of Education have received several questions regarding recent changes to COVID-19 policies for school sports and performance spectators. This was clarified by Dr. Willis and Santora at a recent public health update, but here is a summary:
Due to the Omicron variant’s high infectivity rate, spectator attendance of school indoor sports games and performances will be limited to 50 people. Spectators can only be parents and/or legal guardians who are fully vaccinated and boosted (if booster eligible). Face coverings must be worn while indoors, and enhanced face coverings are strongly encouraged (e.g., KN95, N95, respirator masks, or double masks). Schools are responsible for vaccine verification and face covering adherence.

Additional information regarding schools and an update regarding Marin County’s response to COVID-19 will be highlighted during Marin County Office of Education’s forthcoming online event. All members of our community are encouraged to join MCOE’s upcoming virtual Public Health Update for the School Community, which will be hosted on Zoom. Superintendent of Schools Mary Jane Burke will serve as moderator. Guest speakers include Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis and Deputy Public Health Officer Dr. Lisa Santora.
