Chamber music is up close and personal, performed by a handful of talents in a small venue or room. Thus the reference to “chamber” in the description. The number of musicians varies: three to five players may form trios, quartets, and quintets.

Chamber music differs from symphonic orchestras in that each musician has one part to play, without another musician duplicating the part. They are seated close to one another to enable them to interact and play freely with their fellow musicians, without a conductor.

Although the Mill Valley Chamber Music Society presents ensemble musicians throughout the year, they have lined up an exceptional solo performance to start 2022. Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev is an international award-winner who has performed at Davies Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall, among others.

Artistic Director Bill Horne proudly admits “I’m thrilled to present this world-renowned musician in an intimate setting at an affordable ticket price, right here in Mill Valley.”

Mr. Yakushev will perform Haydn’s Sonata in D Major, Beethoven’s “Tempest” Sonata No. 17, Scriabin’s “Nocturne” for the left hand, and Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata no. 7. His performance is at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Mt. Tamalpais United Methodist Church, 410 Sycamore Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941. Parking at the church is free.

As the year unfolds, the non-profit Mill Valley Chamber Music Society plans to present the renowned Horszowski Trio on February 27th, the Latin-inspired Quartet San Francisco on March 27th, and New Esterhazy Quartet playing period string instruments on April 10.

Tickets are $40 with youths under 18 free. Tickets, including discounts for multiple subscriptions, are available at chambermusicmillvalley.org or email mvchambermusicsociety@gmail.com

The Mill Valley Chamber Music Society policy requires masks during the entire concert AND to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Patrons will be asked for proof of vaccination.
