Marin County COVID-19 Status Update:  February 4, 2022 

The Marin County COVID-19 Status Update is published weekdays and as needed to share important news and resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic and to keep the local economy running. We remain here for you.  

New Hospitalization Dashboard Tracks Marin Resident Data 

Today, Marin County Public Health debuted a new interactive dashboard that displays the weekly and cumulative count of Marin County residents hospitalized for COVID-19 and the weekly and cumulative count of Marin residents with a COVID-19 death.  

The current daily hospitalization census data dashboard is primarily used to monitor impacts of COVID-19 on hospital capacity, whereas the new cumulative hospitalizations overtime can help us under the community impacts as a result of COVID-19.  In addition, the new dashboard tracks incidents among Marin County residents, whereas the hospitalization census dashboard counts all people – both Marin and non-Marin residents – hospitalized for COVID-19 in local hospitals.

Updated Schools Guidance  

Marin County Public Health (MCPH) has provided new COVID-19 guidance for all youth performing arts, sports, and extracurricular activities for the local community. This change comes as California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has updated its 2021-2022 K-12 Schools Guidance on school-based and non-school based extracurricular activities.  

In summary, MCPH recommends the following:  

• Masks are required indoors for all participants, coaches, personnel, and spectators: This is regardless of vaccination status. They are required by all individuals, if practicable, while playing all indoor sports, exercising, or conditioning.  
• COVID-19 boosters: It is recommended that all eligible participants of the activity receive a COVID-19 booster shot. Each organization and event can require participants to be fully vaccinated or boosted.  
• COVID-19 testing: Participants who are unable to wear a mask due to heavy exertion from the activity should take a surveillance test. Antigen tests are recommended.  
• Isolation and quarantine: Schools, youth performance arts, sports, and extracurricular activities must refer to Marin County’s Isolation and Quarantine Guidance for Schools and Child Care for guidance. Activities no longer need to be suspended if there is an outbreak but completing teams must be notified of the exposure event. Rapid antigen tests are recommended for all exposed persons prior to participating in the activity. 
   

 Guidance for exposed individuals in youth settings:  

• People who have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days do not need to quarantine. Only test if symptoms develop.  
• Fully vaccinated and/or boosted students don’t need to quarantine but should test on day 5, or sooner if symptoms develop.  
• Staff who are fully vaccinated and who are eligible but not yet boosted, may participate with a negative diagnostic test on day 5. They must also wear a well-fitting mask and monitor for symptoms for 10 days.  
• Unvaccinated students should: test on day 5 after exposure. They can stay in school but not participate in extracurricular activities until they receive a negative test result. They should wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days.  
• Unvaccinated staff must stay home and quarantine, test on day 5, then they can return on day 6 with a negative result. They should wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days.

Marin County Office of Education (MCOE) will host an online Public Health Update next Wednesday, February 9, at 3:00PM for school staff, teachers, administrators, parents and guardians. Superintendent of Schools Mary Jane Burke will moderate this online event.
