San Anselmo, how does your community garden grow?
With love, care and a pinch of acrimony.
The community gardens at Robson-Harrington Park have supported 33 individual plots for some 50 years. In that time, the place was self-governed and existed season to season without much controversy.
But lately, issues have arisen such as a long waiting list to get a plot, despite about one third of the existing plot holders being non-residents of San Anselmo. Some want to expand the gardens to accommodate, but others want the gardens disbanded and the land used for other community needs.
Town government stepped in last week to quiet the disagreements. The gardens will now be ruled by the Recreation Department. The non-residents can keep their plots, 10 additional plots will be created, all new plots will be assigned to San Anselmo residents with diversity in mind.
