Farmland on the San Pablo Bay filled a need for military air defense when Hamilton Field in 1935 was established as a bombardment base of the 1st Wing of the Air Force.
The base was decommissioned in 1975. Levies were removed and the airfield was restored to a salt water habitat.
Today, a 2.8-acre parcel of the old base will become a Homeward Bound 24-unit building reserved for homeless veterans. Groundbreaking for Phase 1 took place last Thursday.
