A veritable who’s-who list of seminal musicians took the stage at Hopmonk Tavern in a memorial service concert for fellow Marin bass player Pat Campbell of Novato on Sunday (Dec. 4). Above, left to right, are David Nelson, founding member of ‘New Riders Of The Purple Sage’, Lorin Rowan of the Rowan Brothers, Dore Coller, a musical luminary from Mill Valley, Ken Emerson, a preeminent Grammy Award winning slide Guitar player, and Jeannie Pohling, a local Blue Grass favorite. The concert that went non-stop from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a long line of notable musicians, some nearly in their 80’s, waited patiently back stage while their contemporaries, each in turn played 3 songs apiece. The list included Nick Gravenites (announcing this would be his last performance) of ‘Butterfield Blues Band’, Barry Melton of ‘Fish’, Dave Getz of ‘Big Brother’ and Roy Blumenthal of ‘The Blues Project’. Other popular Marin County musicians and singers included Chuck Poling, Jimbo Trout, Willow van den Hoek, Matt Lacques, and Tonee Norman. Proceeds from ticket sales were donated to ELM (elmprogram.org) a music enrichment program for children in San Rafael and Venetia Valley.

Epic show. I’m surprised that Jefferson Starship/ Quicksilver Messenger Service member David Freiberg wasn’t mentioned. He flew in straight from playing a 7,000 person arena. And he sang his butt off!
