Dear editor,
This is a letter I sent to Novato’s city manager and Council.
“Dear Adam and Novato City Council,
In 2005 the city of Novato purchased the Novato Theater for an undisclosed amount which the then law allowed the city to hide the purchase price.
“The Novato Theater nonprofit purchased the property from the city for $50,000.
“All funds of the theater being sold should be given to the city OR the failed nonprofit should deed back the property to the city. Once the failed nonprofit deeds the property back to the city, the city can then remove the deed restriction and keep whatever proceeds are obtained from the sale or better yet, give the property to competent individuals who can get a theater done.
“Removing the entertainment restriction from the property will guarantee that Keith Greggor, Judy Arnold et al., not only destroyed a vintage theater, left us with a hole in the ground/blight in the downtown, and will guarantee a theater will never be built.
“If the failed nonprofit was granted the deed restriction removal, what would they do with the extra money if they did not return all sale proceeds back to the city? There has been no accountability of how the donated funds have been spent thus far. The city of Novato should receive every penny of taxpayer money back.
“The city of Novato donated approx $1,371,150 and the county of Marin $300,000 to this failed nonprofit.
“Please consider doing right by the taxpayer and the good people of Marin and Novato.”
