Retired National Park Ranger Marcus Combs will be the featured speaker at the Novato Historical Guild’s Quarterly Membership Meeting on Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Novato City Hall.  The meeting is open to the public and free of charge.

The subject of Marcus’ talk is “San Francisco Before the Gold Rush.”  His primary focus will be the Presidio and the town of Yerba Buena before it became the City of San Francisco in 1847.  He will discuss the early relations between the First Nations and Spanish soldiers, missionaries, settlers, and international powers.

Marcus grew up in Mill Valley and received his bachelor’s degree in U.S. History from San Francisco State University. He worked for 35 years as a Park Ranger for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and was a recipient of the National Park Service’s “Connecting People to Parks” award.  Marcus spent much of his career at the Presidio of San Francisco from the time of its conversion from military post to National Park site. His areas of expertise also include Alcatraz Island, Muir Woods, Marin Headlands, Lands’ End and Ocean Beach.  He has led countless interpretative programs on SF history and trained new rangers on interpretation skills.
