The Novato Historical Guild will hold its Quarterly Membership Meeting on Saturday, September 9, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Hamilton History Museum, 555 Hangar Drive. The general public is invited to attend; there is no charge.
Featured speaker is Kate Johnston, Hamilton Museum docent. Her topic: “The early, quirky history of Hamilton Field.”
Learn how an Italian chef named Salvatore helped get Marin an air base; how different animals outsmarted the base commander….repeatedly; which Native-American base commander had a song written for him in his native Osage that is still performed in his honor; why a Lieutenant General and a Lieutenant Colonel each chose to put female pilots in charge of ferrying different aircraft; what Abbot and Costello and the Dalai Lama have to do with the base, and much more.
For those interested, the talk will be followed by a 2-mile loop walking tour (with a 1-mile option) led by Johnston. The walk is mostly flat, with one short, steep hill at the end.
