Dec. 29, 1942 – July 14, 2023
Laurie Monroe, lovingly called “Baba” by her grandchildren, was born to Keith and Tashi Monroe and raised in Sausalito, California. Along with her twin sister, Terry Kinsey (neè Monroe), she attended Mount Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley.
She and her first husband, Michael W. Rice of Belvedere, had a daughter, Shawn Monroe Rice Pleimann. Together, they enjoyed life in the Bay Area, living in Marin and San Mateo counties, until they divorced while Shawn was young. Laurie remarried William E. Tickell II of Long Beach. The family settled in San Luis Obispo, where they welcomed a son, William E. Tickell III. Along with raising her two children in San Luis Obispo, Laurie worked for Edna Valley Vineyards, and then opened a small boutique in the downtown area. Following her divorce from her second husband, Laurie returned to Sausalito, working for Clipper Yacht Harbor, after which, she continued her long career as a bookkeeper for The Marin Scope Community newspapers.
Laurie walked through life with elegance, humor, and love. Living in her much-loved houseboat, she enjoyed the quiet of the waterfront surrounded by her books and bathed in her music. She took delight in good food, good coffee, and the occasional glass of wine or martini. She loved spending time at the beach, with Carmel-by-the-Sea a particular favorite place to visit.
A true gentle woman, Laurie lived her life to the fullest and on her own terms. She will be remembered for her loving grace, felt by all who had the pleasure of spending time with her. She is survived by daughter Shawn, son William, two granddaughters – Tyler and Alexandra Pleimann – and her beloved dog, Coco.
A loving mother, grandmother, dog-mom, and friend, Laurie will be dearly missed.
Celebration of life and memorial plans for Laurie are yet to be announced.
