Novato’s City Manager resigns

November 4, 2023 by Marin 1 Comment

Adam McGill

After 32 years in public service, the City of Novato announced the town’s manager of the last seven years has resigned. Details on why were not disclosed in a Saturday press release which came to the news media at 2 p.m.

McGill was appointed as Novto’s City Manager, following three years of service as Novato’s Chief of Police, with unanimous approval from the City Council in November 2019. Prior to his Novato service, his experience in public safety and local government included serving as Police Chief in the cities of Newman and Truckee, with deep experience in multiple police units.

He had considered a run for Marin County Sheriff, but withdrew for health reasons.

The city’s press release said: “As City Manager, McGill led the City through challenging times. His crisis management and leadership skills were critical in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his expertise and guidance, staff worked to ensure the health and safety of the community while coordinating with other agencies on regional rapid response, emergency and relief efforts. During his tenure, McGill increased the City’s staffing levels, successfully negotiated labor contracts, and reduced staffing turnover to less than 4%. McGill executed two bold strategic plans in concert with the City Council and completed many projects including the Hill Recreation Area, the 2035 update of the General Plan, and redistricting of Novato’s Council districts.”

“The Council and I offer deep appreciation for Adam’s leadership, dedication and numerous contributions to Novato as Police Chief and City Manager, respectively,” said Mayor Susan Wernick. “I wish him well and hope he knows what his leadership has meant to this community.”

“I can leave knowing that the City is in the capable hands of our mighty staff and dedicated City Council. I feel privileged to have worked alongside a group of such talented and loyal public servants,” said City Manager Adam McGill. “The last seven years have been an honor, and my wife and I will continue to raise our children in this beautiful community. I will forever be Novato Proud.”

McGill’s resignation is effective December 31.

The City Council will be releasing further updates in the near future.

Just curious, does this involve working for another agency while keeping the retirement pension from Novato? Did he get retirement benefits from previous positions? I don’t want to sound like he doesn’t deserve a good retirement, but since the majority of our budget goes to retirement benefits, it’s valid question since pension stacking is so prevalent.
