A funny thing happened on the way to making the multitude of Marin County commissions more diverse.
Supervisors heard a detailed staff presentation suggesting that of the 355 people now actively serving on Marin’s commissions, too many of them are “retired, white, heterosexual and a homeowner.” A strategic plan is therefore in order, staff said, to correct the makeup of the county’s 58 boards.
But the first question that sprang to mind for Supervisors wasn’t diversity, it was “What? We have 58 boards?”
“Have we considered whether or not we have more commissions than a county our size ought to have?” new Supervisor Eric Lucan asked. “If I attempted to name all 58, I don’t know how close I would get, and I think that says something in and of itself.”
Other supervisors agreed. The item was tabled for further discussion.
