Sausalito’s mellow top cop calls it a day

December 16, 2023 by Marin Leave a Comment

Sausalito’s police chief, John Rohrbacher, above, will retire on Dec. 24.

The ever calm top cop of Sausalito, John Rohrbacher will retire on Dec. 24, after more than seven years at the helm of the Sausalito Police Department.

Rohrbacher joined the department as a captain in 2009. Previous to his arrival in Sausalito, he served as an investigator for the Marin County District Attorney’s Office and as chief of the San Rafael Police Department, where he worked for more than 25 years.

Major accomplishments during Chief Rohrbacher’s tenure in Sausalito include the deployment of new technologies like license plate cameras, the development of comprehensive plans for managing tourist bicycles and the Sausalito anchorage, and careful oversight of the homeless encampment that was active in town from January 2021 to August 2022.

As chief, Rohrbacher was known for his calm demeanor, professionalism, and warm sense of humor. He is credited within the department and City administration for fostering a culture that emphasizes a compassionate approach to law enforcement, connection with residents and visitors, and professional development of officers and staff.

Adds City Manager Chris Zapata, “His mentoring of the current Sausalito command staff, including Acting Chief Stacie Gregory, will benefit us all for many years to come.”
