New Sausalito arts center calls on the community to stop rent increase

February 14, 2024 by Marin Leave a Comment

Dear supporter of the arts,

As you are aware, Marin Open Studios has been a champion for our art community for more than 30 years. So when the future of an important arts organization is under threat, we feel compelled to action.

The Sausalito Center for the Arts (SCA), a vital new addition to our Marin art community, faces a significant rent increase that threatens its future. This center has been crucial for artists to exhibit, connect, and draw inspiration.

SCA’s growth and momentum is under threat due to an anticipated rent increase this March, by its landlord, the City of Sausalito.

The proposed rent increase from $4,029 to $11,095 per month is self defeating. It undermines SCA’s ability to maintain and improve the building, and to put on the kind of artistic programing and events that attract residents and regional visitors.

The issue of rent increase will be addressed at a City Council meeting on February 20 at 7pm.

How you can help:

  1. Email citycouncil@sausalito.gov: Send the City Council a message asking not to raise SCA’s rent as a reward for the exceptional, high value, public service SCA is providing for the entire City!
  2. Spread the Word: Encourage others to support this cause.
  3. Attend the Sausalito City Council Meeting on February 20 at 7pm in person or on zoom.

Thank you for all you do to make Marin the vibrant art community that it is,

Jonah Burlingame

Board Chair
