Cops give chase after seeing a smash-n-grab in San Rafael; felon arrested, another man flees into the night

February 27, 2024 by Marin Leave a Comment

Suspect’s truck. Passenger fled into the night.

Last night, (Feb. 26) an SRPD officer patrolling Golden Hinde Boulevard near Los Ranchitos Road witnessed a car burglary in progress. The officer saw a suspect remove a bag from the vehicle they had just broken into. The officer drove toward the suspects, and they jumped into and fled in an awaiting pickup truck. The officer then gave chase, and the vehicle drove onto a dead-end street. When the vehicle came to a stop, a suspect passenger jumped out of the car and ran away. The officer was able to detain the suspect driver and waited for additional backup.

The driver was detained, and officers searched the suspect’s vehicle. Officers located drugs, a loaded handgun, the bag the officer witnessed being taken from the burglarized vehicle, and additional stolen property.

Officers searched for the suspect passenger and were not able to immediately locate him. The driver suspect, who is a convicted felon, was arrested and booked into the Marin County Jail on a number of weapons, drugs, and theft-related crimes. The pickup truck the suspects fled in was impounded and is under investigation as it had an incorrect license plate and appears to be misappropriated under a stolen or fictitious identity.

Drugs were found in the truck. Also a gun.

SRPD officers are working on leads to identify the passenger and determine who the additional found stolen property belongs to.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
