Novato middle school locked down by police after ‘gun’ battle

March 16, 2024 by Marin 2 Comments

‘Gun’ battle sparks alarm.

Earlier this afternoon (3/15), NPD received a report of a teenager with a handgun hiding behind a bush, in front of Sinaloa Middle School. The report came in after classes were released for the day, but some students and staff remained on campus.

The school was contacted and placed into lockdown. Novato Police Officers located the teens involved. Investigation revealed that they were in possession of Nerf guns (see photo) and were participating in “Nerf gun wars” for a Senior Challenge.

Officers provided the high schoolers with safety information surrounding Nerf guns and the school lifted the lockdown.

Nerf guns are not inherently dangerous, but there can be dangers with risky behavior that arises during these types of Senior Challenges. Imitation firearms can pose safety hazards and create fear and panic if used in public places.

We are thankful this incident did not involve a real firearm and those participating did not have negative intentions. We remind our community to be aware of the safety concerns regarding use of imitation firearms, Nerf guns, or senior challenges, especially while driving.

As the safety of our community remains our top priority, give us a call at 415-897-4361 if you notice suspicious behavior. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.
