The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Anne Dubinsky Altman as the new permanent superintendent of Point Reyes National Seashore beginning Sept. 22, 2024.
Altman has been the deputy superintendent at Point Reyes National Seashore since 2022, and acting superintendent since June 2024. She has worked for the National Park Service for 23 years in a variety of roles in parks, the Pacific West Region, and the NPS national headquarters.
“Anne is a collaborative leader with an energetic and transparent approach,” said Pacific West Regional Director David Szymanski. “She has an intimate understanding of park operations at Point Reyes, a strong connection to the community, and an extensive network within the National Park Service. We look forward to her leading the team at the park towards future stewardship and service.”
As superintendent, Altman will oversee more than 80 miles of undeveloped coastline, 147 miles of hiking trails, several [http://backcountry%20campgrounds/]backcountry campgrounds, and many beaches.
“I am honored to be chosen as the superintendent of Point Reyes National Park,” said Altman. “Point Reyes has been a very special place for my family and me for a long time. I look forward to working with the amazing park staff, community members, government and nonprofit partners, and the Tribe to chart the park’s path forward, building on past achievements and future objectives.”
Altman started her career through the National Parks Business Plan Internship (BPI) at Bryce Canyon National Park. She accepted her first permanent position as a management assistant at Rocky Mountain National Park after she finished her degree.
After her time in Colorado, Altman served as the chief of commercial services for the Pacific West Region, special assistant to the deputy director for management and administration, and as a senior member of the Washington, D.C.-based Business Management Group. In 2011, Altman received a prestigious Department of Interior “Honor Award.”
Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Earth Systems from Stanford University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California at Davis.
Altman, her husband Mike, and her two teenage sons are longtime residents of Fairfax, California. She loves hiking, trail running, baseball, and all outdoor activities.
Point Reyes National Seashore was established in 1962 to preserve and protect wilderness, natural ecosystems, and cultural resources along the diminishing undeveloped coastline of the United States. Located 30 miles north of San Francisco, the seashore is a sanctuary for numerous plant and animal species.
The park includes the 32,730-acre Phillip Burton Wilderness, which includes one of only two designated marine wilderness areas within the National Park System. The park also contains roughly 300 historic structures including the 149-year-old Point Reyes Lighthouse, and manages nine historic districts including two National Historic Landmarks.
The park has a general agreement for a government-to-government partnership with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, a federally recognized Tribe representing Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo Indians, whose ancestral territory includes all of Marin County and Sonoma County.
