Catastrophic wildfire threat: ‘Significant progress made, much important work remains’

January 24, 2025 by Marin Leave a Comment

With the recent events in Los Angeles, it’s understandable that residents are concerned and have questions about similar risks in Marin County, as well as the efforts being made to reduce those risks and prevent a similar event from occurring here.

In 2020, Marin residents took a significant step by passing an ordinance to create the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA). Over the past four years, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District has been actively working to mitigate wildfire risks, increase public education, raise awareness, and improve community preparedness.

While significant progress has been made, much important work remains—and it requires active participation from each of you. Individual preparedness and vegetation management are critical components in reducing both the likelihood and severity of a wildfire event here in Marin.

Below you’ll find a summary of the actions your fire departments and the MWPA are undertaking, along with a reminder of the steps you can take to help reduce wildfire risks. Please take a moment to review these points and consider how you can contribute to creating a safer community.

Thank you for your continued attention and commitment to wildfire prevention. – Chris Tubbs, Fire Chief, Southern Marin Fire Protection District
