Below is the latest communication to Marinscope on the opposition to “extra” rent control in Fairfax, San Anselmo and Larkspur.
The Campaigns are ON!
The communities of Fairfax, San Anselmo, and Larkspur are all facing the blight of extra rent control. All three communities have active, engaged citizen groups working hard to help make Marin rental housing be more affordable and just for housing providers, homeowners, and renters.
Keep reading and learn how you can get involved helping overturn and prevent extreme, unfair, unwelcome, and potentially disastrous additional rent control in your community.
You may have seen how the DSA (Democratic Socialists of America) has maligned mom & pop housing providers and written a whole-lotta half-truths about the ‘benefits’ of extreme rent control. But we know better.
Now is your chance to join in and, as Kamala says, “Do Something!” Join your neighbors and help bring common sense back to our communities.
Patient Zero.
The DSA thought Fairfax would be easy-pickings for getting their Berkeley Rent Board-written extra rent control ordinances imposed on the residents. But we fought back!
The “YES on I” campaign is ready to launch with mailers, yard signs and canvassing. We want all of the residents of Fairfax to know about the negative financial consequences of these ordinances on homeowners, housing providers and renters.
Check out the official “Yes on I” website: https://keepfairfaxfair.com/,
and look for our official campaign launch party invite coming soon!
How can you help? We need both your generous support ($), and a small amount of your time to help spread the word. Here is a request from our volunteer coordinator Claire:
We need your help to walk specific neighborhoods during September and October so residents can understand what is at stake in the upcoming election. Our coordination team is working with MarinResidents.org, The Fairfax Association of Small Rental Providers, and every concerned homeowner to reject these ordinances.
Make no mistake: elections in Fairfax are often won or lost by just a few votes, and the most effective way to win is to walk every neighborhood, engaging residents whenever possible and providing them with information so they understand what is at stake. We will provide you with the materials to distribute to assigned neighborhoods so your efforts will not be duplicated and we will do our best to make this process as seamless and positive as possible.
Can we count on your assistance this time around? Can you spread the word to family and friends and help us assemble the team we need to reach every home in Fairfax?
Only with your dedication can we defeat these ordinances this November. Please reach out and connect at keepfairfaxfairact@gmail.com and help us help our community.
Thank you, Claire

So I hope you can join you neighbors and friends from all the communities and send a definitive message that the negative financial effects of extra rent control are not wanted in Marin.
San Anselmo:
San Anselmo was the next community on the DSA’s target list and the three DSA aligned Town Council members almost got away with imposing rent control without a vote of the people. But the people were angry and rallied to create a referendum and force the issue onto the ballot.
Measure N – “Rent Stabilization”, and Measure 0 – “Just Cause” are the proposed excessive rent control measures that will affect many of the apartments in San Anselmo. And yes, it 40% below inflation yearly rent cap and yes, there are some unreasonable ‘just cause’ measures thrown in – just cause.
The main message here like in other communities is that existing California comprehensive rent control does a pretty good job of protecting tenants and having a reasonable return for housing providers. – We don’t need excessive rent control coming in and hurting the rental market by driving out housing providers and driving up rents! But you know that.
If you are a San Anselmo resident, we can use your help walking your neighborhood and putting out a yard sign. If you can help, email SAVol@marinresidents.org
AND, you can check out our website at MarinResidents.org/San-Anselmo for updates and other info.
Details of our kickoff party will be coming soon. But we can always use your financial support. Go to our PAC page at MarinResidentsPAC.org to contribute!
Remember: Vote NO on N&O!
Remember: Vote YES on I
And check out the other communities!
| Larkspur: Larkspur is the last community targeted with perhaps the craziest mondo extreme rent control measure yet. It’s the wish list of every bad idea the DSA can think of. If implemented, this will have a disastrous affect on rental housing in Larkspur. It’s 37 pages long! with confusing sometimes nonsensical regulations. On the MarinResidents/Larkspur page we have an annotated copy for download and the scathing Larkspur staff report indicating the numerous ways this could hurt the City. The MarinResidents are working with a citizen’s group to defeat this Measure K. Check out the official web site at: NOonK.vote There, you can sign up to get a yard sign and volunteer to walk you neighborhood. You’ll be provided with all the taking points and material you need. AND! We are going to have a super-fun launch party at a private restaurant in the Bon Air shopping complex on Sept 5!. To RSVP and see the invite, go to our eventbrite invite. All likeminded Larkspur residents are invited, but you have to RSVP! And! Come speak with us at our table at the annual Larkspur Wine Stroll on Sept 7 downtown. That will be incredible for any wine lover! |
| We need your help to spread our message! The MarinResidents.org is part of a group of local rental housing advocates that is working with local citizen’s groups to repeal the extreme rent control ordinances in Fairfax, San Anselmo and Larkspur. And we are fighting back against the well-funded big money political organizations, socialist labor groups and government subsidized tenant groups who simply see mom & pop housing providers as a problem to be eliminated. We are working on the campaigns to repeal these crushing ordinances in all three communities because the opposition is there and we need your help. Please contribute to the MarinResidentsPAC.org for your specific community’s campaign. Please speak with your neighbors about how extreme rent control hurts you and hurts the value of their property. Please put up a yard sign. We’ll deliver one right to you. “Extra Rent Control Hurts Us All.” Other campaign signs will be available in September. Email info@marinresidents.orgPlease be willing to tell your story online about being a part of the community and what your rental property means to you and your family. Email info@marinresidents.org if you are willing to share your story in our forthcoming media campaign. All of these efforts help to tell the community that we belong here, we are their neighbors, and that supporting neighborhood rental housing providers – not extreme rent control ordinances – helps make Marin affordable and a place we all can call home. We’ll be needing volunteer canvassers to walk the neighborhoods come September. But for now, we are preparing all the elements to make sure we win in November! Thank you. Let’s settle this now, so we don’t have to fight in again in the future! We’ve had great success bringing awareness to about Extra Rent Control with our yard sign campaign. Every well-dressed yard should have one. If you want one for your yard, email and let us know. Extra rent control? In 2019, Gov. Newsom helped pass AB 1482 – statewide rent control. The problem with that law is that it gives very little protection to housing providers, but it governs how housing providers and tenants interact. We need reasonable protections for homeowners, housing providers and tenants, not extra rent control. We are a small group of Fairfax and Marin residents who depend on your generosity to inform and make things happen. Please contribute to help us continue this effort. |
