The City of Novato has cut its workforce by the equivalent of 17 people to cope with the ongoing budget crunch.
The City Council made the decision last month. Most of the cuts will come to positions already left unfilled. It represents a reduction of about 8 percent.
Mayor Pro Tem Pat Eklund said the current city staffing is unsustainable.
“I am so sorry about the people’s lives that we’re affecting,” said Eklund who blamed the cuts on other council members who voted for past city budgets.
“I have voted ‘no’ on our budget for at least the past five years, if not longer than that. I have been trying to get the attention that we are spending more than what we should be.”
