Connecting Communities Project plugs in the poor to the Digital Age

March 24, 2025 by Marin 1 Comment

Marin County Supervisor Dennis Rodoni gets updated by Ismenia Briceno (left) and Xitlalli Lechuga of the Marin County Free Library’s Marin WebStars team about how they are assisting on the connectivity project.

MARIN COUNTY PRESS RELEASE

Marin County is moving forward with a Digital Marin Connecting Communities Project at five Marin Housing Authority sites. The project’s public outreach and needs assessment revealed this group of residents disproportionately experiences the digital divide between those who can afford and obtain internet service and those who cannot. The initiative provides an internet-ready device and two years of free internet service, support, and training for 200 older adults and people with disabilities living at the sites.

Through collaboration among Marin Housing Authority, Marin County Information Services and Technology (IST), Marin County Free Library (MCFL), and Xfinity Comcast, the project is well underway, with free internet service already available at two sites and device distribution in progress.

Rich Levine, the IST Broadband Systems Engineer overseeing the initiative, emphasized the project’s mission of “meeting each residents’ needs with dignity and respect by providing the tools, skills, and support necessary to navigate the digital world.”

Two participants from MCFL’s youth empowerment program, Marin WebStars, are working with Levine to provide hands-on tech support and training to residents, helping them gain independence through improving digital skills. By offering personalized guidance, they ensure residents feel confident using technology. The WebStars take pride in providing tailored support to make the learning process more manageable and enjoyable.

In addition to County funding, Xfinity Comcast contributed $10,000 to the MCFL Foundation’s Education Equity Initiative to enhance digital literacy and support the project. “Knowledge and connectivity are key to the future, and partnerships like this one strengthen communities,” said Marcos Montes, Director of Government Affairs for Comcast California.

A five-member executive steering committee with membership from the participating organizations ensures project success, keeping it on track and aligned with its mission to empower Marin Housing Authority residents.

Digital Marin is a cross-sector initiative that developed a countywide Broadband Strategic Plan and is working to address digital equity gaps. The Plan outlines projects and initiatives to help reach these goals.

  • High-quality broadband is available to everyone in Marin.
  • Everyone in Marin can take advantage of all online opportunities,
  • Marin has a high rate of digital adoption that benefits everyone,
  • Marin has a community driven organization with a mission to deliver broadband for all.
