Darkness falls on storm battered Novato; city issues response update

On Saturday, December 14, Novato experienced heavy rain and strong winds, leading to widespread power outages, downed power lines and trees, flooding, road closures, debris on roadways, and traffic signal outages throughout the city. Emergency crews from Novato Police, Public Works and Building, as well as Novato Fire and PG&E continue to resolve multiple storm related incidents impacting our community.

Important Safety Reminders:

We advise residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel. If you must travel, please adhere to emergency signage and proceed cautiously as cleanup efforts continue and crews work to reopen roadways. If a traffic signal is out, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas and keep away from downed or hanging power lines. If you see downed powerlines, stay away and remain in your home or car. First, call 9-1-1 and then call PG&E at 1-877-660-6789.

Power Outages:

PG&E crews are working to address power outages as quickly as possible. Do not call 9-1-1 to report power outages. For power outage updates and reporting, please visit PG&E’s website at https://pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/outage-tools/outage-map/.

Residents are encouraged to sign up to receive outage alerts directly from PG&E via their website to ensure the most accurate and up to date information about potential outages affecting their area at https://www.pge.com/en/account/manage-my-account/online-account-preferences/outage-alerts.html.

Reporting Issues:
To report downed trees and flooding within Novato, please contact Novato Public Works at 415.899.8280. When reporting on weekends or after 5pm on weekdays, please call Novato Police Department’s non-emergency line at 415.897.4361.

Sandbags:

Sand and bags are available at the City of Novato Corporation Yard, 550 Davidson Street. You must supply your own labor and shovels. If you are physically unable to fill bags, please contact Public Works at 415.899.8280 to schedule a time to pick up prefilled bags. Limit 10 per resident. More information at novato.org/sandbags.

Stay Informed

Sign up to receive emergency alerts, via Nixle and Alert Marin, directly to your phone or email:

  • Text your zip code to 888-777 or visit nixle.com
  • Register at alertmarin.org

We recommend following the City of Novato and Novato Police Department’s official social media channels for updates, and to sign up for email notifications at novato.org/connectwithus.

Reminder: Call 9-1-1 only in an emergency.

City staff throughout various departments are actively engaged in storm-related response and safety efforts. We appreciate your continued patience and cooperation as emergency crews work diligently to assess and respond to the needs of our community.

Worst Over, But Stay Alert

The worst of the storm has passed, but we’re not completely in the clear yet—residual flooding and light rain is expected through Monday morning. The NWS Coastal Flood Advisory and Flood Watch remain in effect.

There is an additional focus now, to address the power outages impacting our County.. While PG&E works on restoration efforts, here are a few tips to help you stay safe and comfortable in the meantime:

• NEVER use a generator inside your home or garage, even if doors & windows are open. Only use it outside, more than 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows

• During a power outage, ensure your food is kept cold for as long as possible by keeping freezer & refrigerator doors closed. If the power is out for a while, eat perishable foods first, frozen foods second, and non-perishables last.
