Last night, (4/2) just after 8:00 PM, SRPD Officers responded to a solo-vehicle collision at the intersection of Second Street and B Street in Downtown San Rafael.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a pickup truck that had caused major damage at the intersection. The pickup truck had veered onto the north sidewalk of Second Street and collided with a streetlight, multiple trees, a traffic signal pole, and completely took out the traffic signal control box. The driver of the pickup attempted to flee the scene and was stopped by officers.
The driver was arrested for driving under the influence and booked into the Marin County Jail.
The intersection of Second Street and B Street is part of a significant commuter corridor. In the meantime, the intersection is functioning with a flashing red light. Drivers are required to treat a red flashing traffic signal light as a stop sign, come to a complete stop, be aware of cross traffic, yield to pedestrians, and proceed only when it is safe to do so.
Drivers should expect traffic disruptions in the area and allow ample time for potential delays. San Rafael Public Works crews and their contractor are working quickly to fix the signal lights. While it is a top priority to repair the signal lights, it is expected to take more than a day.
Once again, this serves as a reminder not to drive while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Driving under the influence has a profound impact on lives and the community. In this case, the driver will face criminal charges and be held liable for the resulting damages. Fortunately, no one was injured.
