‘Grading for Equity’ too weird even for San Francisco

May 29, 2025 by Marin Leave a Comment

Properly Subersive Quick Commentary

San Francisco has always been an incubator for one-bubble-off-center behavior. But the latest idea became too funky even for San Franciscans themselves.

It’s called “Grading for Equity.” It’s all the rage among liberal educators and without formal Board of Education approval, Superintendent Maria Su set in motion a “Grading for Equity” plan for 10,000 students in the 14 high schools in San Francisco.

Here was her plan. This is not a joke. This was real:

  • Showing up for class, punctuality, homework, and classroom participation no longer influence a student’s final grade.
  • Students will be assessed primarily on one final exam, which they can retake multiple times.
  • A student needs an 80 for an A, and a student can score as low as 21 and still pass with a D.

It was all set to go in motion this fall, until a semi-alert Board of Education member found it buried in a PowerPoint presentation, asked a question, and subsequently blew the whistle.

Parents went crazy in opposition, as they should, and the whole thing was called off this week.

The moral of the story is that crazy ideas still exist in this world. Be alert, friends. Be very alert.
