MILL VALLEY
On Monday, Dec. 2, 2024, at approximately 11:15 AM, Mill Valley police officers were dispatched to the area of Shelter Bay Avenue and Hamilton Drive for a report of an auto burglary. The caller reported that they had located a male subject in their vehicle, and it was believed he may have been burglarizing the vehicle.
Officers were in the area and arrived on scene at the time this incident was being dispatched. Officers located a person matching the description provided by the caller, at which time the person began to flee the area on foot. Officers pursued the suspect as he discarded various items. During the chase, the suspect fled the area by running across US HWY 101 on foot. As officers attempted to recontact the suspect near a business in the 500 block of Redwood Highway Frontage Road, one officer witnessed the suspect enter a vehicle in an attempt to steal the vehicle and flee the area. The suspect was unsuccessful and again attempted to flee the area on foot after attempting to steal two other vehicles, one of which was occupied by at least one person. A short distance later, the suspect was apprehended by officers from the Mill Valley Police Department, the Tiburon Police Department and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
During their investigation, officers suspected the person arrested in this case may have been responsible for a residential burglary that occurred in the 2000 block of Shelter Bay Avenue earlier in the morning. The suspect in this case was in fact later determined to be responsible for the residential burglary through additional investigation and the discovery of evidence linking him to both crime scenes.
The suspect is identified as 45-year-old James Joseph Estes, who does not have a listed Address.
While this case continues to be investigated, and additional charges are possible, Estes has been taken into custody and will be booked into the Marin County Jail.
