Our hearts are broken over the tragedies that have unfolded across the nation in recent weeks.
We mourn and remember: Ahmaud Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade and countless others who have been murdered at the hands of the police.
Canal Alliance stands in solidarity with our black brothers and sisters to demand an end to the systemic racism and oppression that they face every day in this country.
For far too long, people of color have lived in fear. The same law enforcement that brutalizes and kills black people also incarcerates and separates children and families at the border and in undocumented communities throughout the country.
Over the last few months, these atrocities have been compounded as we also mourn for the black and brown people in our community who have been dying from COVID-19 at disproportionately high rates.
We’re grateful for the leadership of San Rafael Chief of Police, Diana Bishop, and her commitment to keeping the community’s best interest in mind. Thanks to Chief Bishop, the San Rafael Police Department continues to provide Racial Profiling and Bias Based Policing training and implementing de-escalation procedures. We also recognize that, unfortunately, such leadership is lacking for many law enforcement agencies across the country.
Right now, protestors are exercising their civil rights to demand change, and their voices and demands deserve to be heard. Police brutality and the killing of our black brothers and sisters must end. Law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for their actions.
We cannot be silent while these atrocious acts continue.
In times like these, we must remember that we’re stronger together. That is why we hope that you will join us and speak out against these injustices and also learn how you can provide support.
Racism is an urgent crisis. It’s time for all of us to demand a change.
Black Lives Matter.
