Novato School District reaches agreement with unions

June 4, 2025 by Marin Leave a Comment

The Novato Unified School District (NUSD) completed negotiations with both the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the Novato Federation of Teachers (NFT), resulting in two Tentative Agreements.

The CSEA Tentative Agreement reached May 30 calls for the following provisions:

  • An ongoing 2% increase to the Classified Salary Schedules for the 2025-2026 school year.
  • A 2.5% increase to the District’s contribution toward medical benefits, effective July 1, 2025.
  • Approval of two new job descriptions: Certified Wellness Coach and Paraeducator – Vocational Transition Program.
  • Agreement on the Impact of Classified Layoffs.

The Tentative Agreement reached June 2 with NFT calls for an ongoing 2.3% increase to all Certificated Salary Schedules for the 2025–2026 school year.

The school district said “These agreements reflect a shared understanding of the challenges facing public education and a mutual commitment to supporting classified and certificated staff.”

A press release from the District said:

Thank you to the NFT and CSEA negotiations teams for their collaboration, professionalism, and dedication throughout the process. Their commitment to open and productive dialogue has been essential in moving our conversations forward in a positive and constructive manner.

Thank you to the Superintendent and the Board of Trustees for their continued support of staff and their commitment to recognizing the critical roles that classified and certificated employees play in student success. Their efforts to prioritize compensation and recognize the critical role educators play in student success have been deeply appreciated.

We also extend a sincere thank you to NUSD administrators for their willingness to forgo a percentage increase to help make possible increases to the salary schedules for other staff. This act of solidarity reflects a strong commitment to supporting the broader educational community.

CSEA members will vote to ratify their Tentative Agreement and new job descriptions on June 10, 2025. NFT members will vote on their Tentative Agreement shortly thereafter. Final approval by the NUSD Board of Trustees is scheduled for the June 24, 2025, Regular Board Meeting.

Together, NUSD, CSEA, and NFT remain committed to honoring the work of all employees and advancing the shared mission of serving students and families across the district.

“We’re proud to have reached agreements that recognize the hard work and dedication of our educators and staff. These salary increases reflect our district’s commitment to attracting and retaining high-quality professionals who support student success every day,” commented Superintendent Dr. Tracy Smith.
