In the month of July, the Department of Homeland Security intercepted a package shipped from the United Kingdom bound for the City of Novato.

The package was found to contain various controlled substance pills, including fentanyl.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office Specialized Investigative Unit (SIU) assumed the investigation and conducted a search warrant at the residence the package was bound for. As a result of the search warrant, Detectives seized over 9,400 illegal pills, most of which are suspected to be counterfeit fentanyl pills.
The street value of these pills was over $45,000-$50,000 dollars.
Detectives also seized suspected cocaine, ketamine, amphetamines, psilocybin mushrooms, heroin and various other types of drugs. Two residents were subsequently arrested on numerous drug related charges.
There has been a nationwide surge in counterfeit pills that are mass produced in labs, deceptively marketed as legitimate, and are killing Americans at an unprecedented rate. This seizure could have potentially saved numerous lives and the Marin County Specialized Investigative Unit is dedicated to keeping these pills off the streets
While some people knowingly consume fentanyl, most people do not know if the drugs they plan to use contain fentanyl. This is especially true of illicit counterfeit pills, which are often made to resemble prescription medications such as oxycodone or benzodiazepines, but really contain fentanyl. Fentanyl is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and a lethal dose may be as small as two milligrams.
