$24 billion spent on homelessness with almost no accountability, state auditor finds

April 9, 2024 by Marin Leave a Comment

A new audit released Tuesday, April 9, shows that California spend $24 billion in the last five years to solve homelessness, but didn’t keep track of the effectiveness of programs.

About 30% of the nation’s homeless live in California — estimated at 171,000 people. The state auditor’s report says that the state didn’t keep reliable data to assess which programs worked and which programs didn’t from a cost standpoint.

The Associated Press report on the news can be found here.
