10,000 Degrees, a San Rafael-based organization dedicated to empowering students to enter and graduate college in Marin and seven other Bay Area counties, will hold its annual “College Opportunities Summit” on Aug. 1, and the “High School Readiness Summit” on Aug. 3 at College of Marin (Kentfield Campus).
The “College Opportunities Summit” is a one-day in-person college success program that focuses on preparing college-bound high school students, from low-income backgrounds, for their senior year of high school and postsecondary education. The 10,000 Degrees “College Opportunities Summit” at College of Marin is part of a summer series that 10,000 Degrees is holding at six partner colleges across the Bay Area.
At the 10,000 Degrees “College Opportunities Summit,” students will have the opportunity to participate in the following workshops and activities led by 10,000 Degrees staff and recent college graduates:
- Why College Is Right For You: understanding major vs. career
- College Exploration: research and discover college pathways, learn about different college systems and degrees, and build a college list
- Q&A Panel: students will hear the journeys and lessons of current college students and recent local graduates
- College Resources: students will learn about various college resources through interactive activities and campus organizations
- Senior Year Roadmap: students will learn how 10,000 Degrees can support students in their senior year, receive a FAFSA/CADA and scholarship overview, and learn about important dates in the college application process
“10,000 Degrees’ resources and programs have helped thousands of Bay Area students prepare for college,” said Maria Hernandez, director of curriculum and engagement at 10,000 Degrees. “For many high school students, especially low-income and first-generation students, preparing for college is not easy. The “College Opportunities Summit” was designed to help students tackle college-related concerns, understand the college admissions process, and gain the necessary tools to enter and successfully complete college.”
The “High School Readiness Summit” is a free in-person early college and career summer program designed by 10,000 Degrees to prepare rising 9th grade students for high school success. In addition to supporting students with their education, the program will provide an opportunity for students to grow skills in their everyday life, including advocacy skills. Specifically, students will learn how to budget properly for future school-related expenses through interactive activities. Additionally, students will learn about the available resources at their high school campus and the programs and services offered at 10,000 Degrees that will support their educational journey.
“For many students, the transition from middle school to high school can be overwhelming, and 10,000 Degrees wants to ensure that students have a strong foundation for success,” said Hugo Que, director of college access (Marin and Contra Costa) at 10,000 Degrees. “At 10,000 Degrees, we truly believe that programs such as the ‘High School Readiness Summit’ will ready students for their first year of high school and beyond and help them build the confidence needed to grow and achieve their academic goals.”
