Barbara L. Fewer, 78, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 22, with her son and her sister at her side. Barbara was born in Mankato, Minnesota in September of 1943, to Hildegard and Harold Asleson.
She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Nicollet Public High School in 1961. Barbara continued her education at the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where, following completion of the degree program, earned her certification as a Registered Nurse.
She met her husband, Michael, in Minneapolis in 1965, which led to their marriage at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in April of 1967, and the enjoyment of 52 years together. Barbara’s career as a nurse spanned nearly 40 years, and entailed much relocation, as a result of Michael’s career, also in the medical field, before they finally settled in Novato, California.
She was known for giving of herself fully to her patients and their families, and for working alongside and overseeing her fellow nurses to provide the most proficient and compassionate care possible. In addition to Barbara’s professional engagement, she was, equally, a devoted wife and a dedicated mother, providing unyielding support in both roles. Barbara was very active in her service to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, as a member for 43 years, and was most visible on a weekly basis, standing alongside her husband, as they performed duties as Lead Ushers during services for over 28 years.
Barbara’s kindness, compassion, and love for others was demonstrated daily through her work, to her family and friends, and, wider still, to the vast number of charitable organizations which she supported throughout her life. She is survived by her son, Brandon, her sister Bonnie (Jim), and her brothers, Roger (Kris), Glen (Becky) and Duane (Patricia). Barbara was pre-deceased by her husband, Michael, and her parents, Hildegard and Harold. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held Thursday, June 16, at 2 p.m., at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located at 1180 Lynwood Drive in Novato, California, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that, if so inclined, donations be sent in Barbara’s name to either Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, or to one of her other preferred charities, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I stand witness to Barbara’s working devotion to all her patients… working along side her at the Redwoods for over 10 years. Her white nurse’s uniform running down the halls and grabbing her blue coat as she got ready to leave… talking about her son in Germany…. she knew all the words to old songs singing along with patients…. cherished memories.
