Clear your Saturday night, Marin because 2021 has become a very special year in the Marin County prep football universe. Not just one, but two teams from Marin will host state championship games on Saturday. And they will both be in Marin.
That’s big-time special.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First, came the division championship games last weekend in which the Mustangs of San Marin in Novato and its legions of fans made the trek to Yuba last Friday to face Sutter High School for the northern title. San Marin travelled, San Marin played and San Marin convincingly beat Sutter 35-7.
The Mustangs are now in the Division 5-AA State Championship game with Independence High School of Bakersfield. The game will be played 6 p.m. Saturday at San Marin.
Meanwhile, the Kentfield boys of Marin Catholic were also busy doing special things. In San Rafael, they won the Division 4-AA championship by nipping Escalon, 21-14.
They will host the 4-AA State Championship game against Central Valley Christian-Visalia 6 p.m. this Saturday.
This has been a magical season for both teams. But this weekend it could become historic — two teams from Marin and two state titles. Wow.
