COVID be damned, Bottle Rocket in Napa still a ‘go’ this weekend

The much postponed music festival Bottle Rocket will take place this weekend (Sept. 3 – 5) in Napa Valley. The event is sold out.

To overcome the Variant D of COVID, festival organizers say that proof of vaccination (or a negative COVID test) is required to attend the festival. Headliners this year are Megan Thee Stallion, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, G-Eazy and Run the Jewels.

Masks will be recommended but not required, per guidelines issued by the California Department of Public Health. The festival will also use touchless wristbands for cashless transactions and offer hand sanitizing stations throughout the festival grounds.

The other large festival coming up is the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park over Halloween weekend.

While health officials in Marin and San Francisco have long said that the risk of outdoor transmission is far lower than indoors, Variant D has shown itself to be 1,000 times more infectious than regular COVID-19.

There have also been outbreaks at outdoor music festivals in other states.

The San Francisco Chronicle interviewed Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a professor specializing in infectious diseases at UCSF. He said: “We haven’t seen anything like delta before.”

Experts are advising attendees to use their heads even in outdoor settings. Get vaccinated, wear a mask and keep a distance from others.

Driven by the highly contagious delta variant, COVID-19 hospitalizations more than doubled throughout the Bay Area between July 24 and Aug. 24.

Napa County is also seeing a sharp increase in COVID cases.
